Update August 2004

I thought it would be interesting to see what what would happen if I worked bigger.

I like it so far but boy it takes a lot of time to cover all that ground. When I'm satisfied with the drawing I'll start layering other areas on: glitter, sequins, clouds, etc.

I found some wildly colored google eyes. I think they look kind of cool on the drawing but they may be too much color for the feeling I'm trying to get.

I was also experimenting with a kind of lace making called tatting. It involves slipping tiny knots along threads to make loops and arches. Maybe it's because I just taught myself how to do it and I'm not used to it but so far it's not my favorite craft. I prefer crochet as a lace-making technique. However, the pattern I chose for my first outing in tatting looks pretty good on the drawing too. I like how it's 3D. I'm working on another, larger one. I'm also trying to figure out if I can get the same effect with crochet.

Tatting gives you the same feeling of a link with history that other needlework does but it sure seems like an impractical way to make a piece of fabric. It must be craft for people with a lot of time on their hands.

I seem to be looking at a lot of small things right now. Not just drawing tiny little flowers with tiny little hairs and tying tiny little knots with tiny little threads. But in Vermont we have a lot of tiny little things to look at.
